Reflection and Opinion on the Beijing Trip

As the teacher announced that we were going to have an exchange programme with the Beijing students, the first reaction was worry. Was it going to turn out fine or would it turn out horrible, two weeks of silence and unable to communicate? Soon it was overwhelmed by another series of emotions where excitement sets in…finally…a trip to overseas.

Firstly I feel sorry for not being able to entertain or even host my partner well due to the clash with common test and various CCA training days that cause all sorts of problem and therefore resulting in a less enjoyable time in Singapore.

On the other hand I am quite happy to know that the students are very warm-hearted and easy to communicate with. As we walk around the school, students would sometimes approach us to ask a few questions and understand more of our Singaporeans lives and even teachers enjoy interacting with us. Therefore in overall, I am very satisfied and also grateful to be part of this programme.

The home stay was a very meaningful experience. First, the parents are very kind people, going into all details to provide a better environment for accommodation in the two weeks. Also it was interesting as there was a first hand experience of how the students in Beijing live, therefore giving a more detailed picture of the life as a Beijing Student.

In summary, the Beijing Trip was a very meaningful yet enjoyable trip, whereby it allowed me to be able to experience life as a Beijing student within these two weeks. As from lessons that can be learnt in Beijing, firstly would be strong emphasis on academic excellence. Schools are able to cooperate well with parents, in order to work out a good schedule to improve the academic results of the students and stand out from the dense population in China. As such life in Beijing is very different as in Singapore due to a strict enforcing of good academic results, where study is simply the only thing most students do throughout the day.

Finally, future trips to Beijing can be conducted by allowing a more relax schedule to enjoy the time in Beijing better. From this experience, I believe the schedule is rather hectic and rush where there was not much time to relax and enjoy the time in Beijing. Therefore the trip can be planned less intensely for a better and idyllic time in Beijing.

For Josephians visiting Beijing in the future, there are many things to see, from historical places to exquisite food and culture. However as I would relate it, expect the unexpected.

1) When I was selected for the trip to Beijing, I felt a sense of excitement as it was my first time traveling to China.
2) The immersion programme was really remarkable as it was the first time I have interacted with students from other country and it was very successful as we could get to taste the food there, visit places of interest like The Great Wall and most important, learn their cultural.
3) The home stay was wonderful as they have played good host to me. They me feel at home and even took care of me well when I was sick for the first few days. Overall I thought that the home stay was a great achievement even though it was only our first year in implementing the home stay idea.
4) I think that the Beijing trip might be a bit too short as it is a really big city to tour. We really enjoyed ourselves and felt that it should have been more than two weeks. I have learned not only more about the Chinese cultural there, but I have also learned about certain traditions that they have.
5) I think as our English is strong, we can go over and teach them English as not only we can learn, they can also learn something. One of the things that I observed was that my foreign friends’ parents wanted me to use English to communicate with their son. I think I can expect future Josephians to forge friends not only locally but internationally. I also feel that Josephians are expected to learn the Chinese cultural and history if they visit Beijing in the future.

I felt honoured and surprised when I was selected to represent the school to go to Beijing for immersion programme. This kind of opportunity is very rare and not everyone has the chance for overseas exchange programme.

The students in Beijing No 8 Middle School were friendly enough to approach me and chat with me. My buddy also introduced some of his friends to me. His house was quite sweet and cosy for me to live in. The maid employed by his mother cooked breakfast and dinner for the trip while I had lunch in the school's canteen which did not have as wide variety of food as St Joseph's Institution.

The school arranged me to a lot of places such as the Forbidden City, Great Wall and many other tourists attraction sites. I learnt the kind of lifestyle a student in Beijing has, the different atmosphere while learning in class and some historical information about Beijing.

The immersion programme duration is long enough for me. More shopping time should be given as mostly when I went shopping arranged by the school, the time was quite insufficent. Josephians can expect to have an enriching, educational, unforgetful pleasant trip when they visit Beijing in future.
